Common Questions


Summit Academy is a new digital-hybrid charter school that will begin in the 2024-2025 school year. Instruction will be all virtual, provided by our Summit teachers. There will be a monthly in-person experience, which will include a mix of culture and relationship building activities, collaboration with peers, leadership opportunities, and regular field trips across SC.

Summit Academy is part of the South Carolina Public Charter School District. We have 2 sister schools: Youth Leadership Academy in Pickens, SC and Tall Pines STEM Academy in Aiken, SC.  

We are part of the SC Public Charter School District, so all students must be residents of South Carolina. We will serve 6th and 7th grade students during year one (2024-2025) and 8th grade students year two and beyond. 

Our online application will be available on the Summit Academy website beginning in September. You MUST complete the application to get your name in the lottery. The lottery will take place in March. We will serve 100 6th graders and 100 7th grade students in year one (2024-2025 school year). 

Important Note: If your child is on a waitlist at YLA or TPSA, you CAN apply for Summit Academy, while remaining on their waitlist. You do NOT lose your spot on the waitlist. 

Our first year for students will be the 2024-2025 school year.

Summit Academy is a charter middle school and will eventually serve 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Year 1 (2024-2025) we will serve 6th and 7th only. Year two (2025-2026) we will add 8th grade.  

The application process will open in September 2023. The application will be available online in September and will be open until March 8, 2024, at 3:00 PM. The lottery will be held on March 11, 2024.  

We are a public charter school, so we accept all students. We will have qualified staff to meet the needs of all students.

  • Year 1: 100 6th graders and 100 7th graders
  • Year 2: Add 8th grade (100-6th, 100-7th, 100-8th)
  • Years 3-5: Add 100 6th graders each year to reach 600 students.

Summit Academy is set to revolutionize traditional learning methods by offering a unique blend of virtual instruction and in-person monthly experiences. We are striving to ensure a well-rounded educational journey for our students. In the ever-evolving dynamic of education, Summit Academy is an emerging solution, catering to the whole child: meeting the personal and academic needs of middle school students. 

Our ultimate goal is to bridge the gap with innovative opportunities for students in the state of South Carolina. 

Summit Academy values family involvement and encourages a close relationship between staff and parents. Parents will earn “parent points” each year. These can be earned from donations, volunteering for trips, and other various ways throughout the year.

Instruction will be delivered by our Summit Academy teachers. Your child will have a teacher for each subject. Instruction will be a mix of live lessons and pre-recorded lessons. 

The in-person experiences will be a mix of leadership opportunities, community service, collaboration and relationship building, and lifetime fitness opportunities. 

Summit Academy students are eligible to play sports for the school they are zoned for.  

According to SC High School League rules: “A charter school student is eligible to compete for, and if selected, participate in an activity governed by the South Carolina High School League Division of Interscholastic Athletics offered at the resident public school he would otherwise attend if the league-governed activity is not offered at the student's charter school
